Palermo Cooking Class & Market Tour
This small group tour blends outdoor exploration with indoor experiences, offering a delectable glimpse into the most delicious side of Palermo.
With the former, you’ll walk down the streets of Mercato del Capo, which is a symbol of one of the oldest traditions of Italy, the local markets, where you can taste some typical local street foods. Later on, at the Florencetown cooking school you’ll be engaged in cooking the loot of your shopping and you’ll enjoy the special meal prepared on your own.
The first step to diving into Palermo’s culinary tradition is to walk the insidious but wonderful alleys of Mercato del Capo, which never lost its authenticity. Here you can breathe the heritage of ancient traditions deeply-rooted in the Arabic and Norman cultures while researching all-natural and genuine products. How to choose the best ones? It’s easy when you’re helped by a professional chef who knows how to distinguish the freshest ingredients. But that’s not it, as you walk along the market you’ll get the chance to taste some delicacies like fried fish, crumpets, and fritters.
Now that you have everything you need you can pitch into the cooking part! Be prepared to put the apron on, your hands on the ingredients and a spell in the dish! Depending on the seasonal food shopping you did at the market, you will cook three different Sicilian specialties: you may start by preparing the iconic “arancina”, a ball of fried rice seasoned with meat sauce and peas, then you could prepare the fresh hand-made pasta, topped “alla norma”: a fried eggplants, sweet tomato and ricotta cheese sauce, and at the end the typical Sicilian cannolo. Whatever ingredients you will find, be prepared to make authentic local dishes!
Aprons off, it’s time to eat what you carefully prepared on your own! Eating traditional dishes in a typical restaurant is good, but eating the product of your cooking commitment has a whole different taste. Your hanger of Sicilian foodies will be filled with the digital recipe booklet you’ll get at the end of the class, together with a Graduation certificate that attests to your cooking skills.
